Mark Keyasko developed a method of electroforming metal over cloth in 1981. Electroforming is a process by which a heavier coating is deposited to make a self-supporting object. Originally, electroforming was built up around a mold that was removed from the finished product. However, with Mr. Keyasko's technique, the matrix of cloth is bonded to the metal.
The New York Times featured him and his new technique in an article published Feb 9, 1986.
The consignor of the piece indicated that the she purchased the piece from the artist himself, who made it especially for her from a piece of elastic fabric!
